LineageOS vs GrapheneOS
A common question, but the two barely overlap. LineageOS is a stable, near-stock ROM that runs on a huge range of phones. GrapheneOS is a security-hardened OS that only runs on Google Pixels. For most people the deciding factor is simply which phone you own.
At a glance
LineageOS
The go-to general-purpose custom ROM: stable, close to stock, and ported to more devices than anything else. Its security is solid stock-AOSP, and you choose how much Google to add. Pick it if you want a dependable daily driver on almost any supported phone — not just a Pixel.
GrapheneOS
A privacy- and security-first OS that hardens Android well beyond stock and removes Google by default (with an optional sandboxed Play install). It only supports Pixel phones, because it relies on their hardware security features. Pick it if you own a Pixel and security is your top priority.
So which should you flash?
- Don't have a Pixel?LineageOS (GrapheneOS isn't an option).
- Have a Pixel and want max security? GrapheneOS.
- Have a Pixel but want broad app compatibility and simplicity? LineageOS still works well.
Check what your phone supports
GrapheneOS is Pixel-only, so this usually settles it. Search your phone to see whether LineageOS and GrapheneOS support it.
